CID Bamboo Ceiling and Wall
During the summer of 2021, I had the wonderful opportunity to help build installation pieces for the new Creativity and Innovation District building at Virginia Tech.
The purpose of this research project was to familiarize future designers with using more sustainable materials like bamboo.
This was a primarily student-run project with all of the designing and fabrication being done by students. I was part of an incredible team of 8 other students in architecture and design. Together we successfully constructed a bamboo lattice ceiling, and bamboo and plaster wall for the CID building.
I worked with a variety of different materials including bamboo, bio lime, aluminum, and plaster. My favorite part was helping make the aluminum brackets for the wall. I had never had the opportunity to work with metal in that way and found the process very interesting.
I had so much fun working on this project and got to learn a lot of practical design and fabrication skills. Everyone had a symbiotic role in the production of this project.
My primary job was finishing and detailing. I sanded, painted, and detailed all the bamboo that went into both installations.
